AEO and GEO Explained for Business Owners: Win AI Citations

“Customers now ask ChatGPT instead of Googling. AEO and GEO explained without jargon — how to get your business cited in AI answers and turn citations into leads.”

Your Next Customer Asked ChatGPT, Not Google

Picture this. Someone in Delhi needs a dental implant. Two years ago they Googled "best dentist Delhi" and clicked websites. Today they ask ChatGPT "who is a trusted dentist in Delhi for implants?" and get three names with reasons. If your business is not among the cited names, you never existed in that conversation.

This shift is massive and most Indian businesses are sleepwalking through it. This guide explains AEO and GEO in plain owner-language — and exactly how to get cited.

---

AEO vs GEO in One Paragraph

AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) makes your content quotable by answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews. Short verbatim answers, FAQ schema, clean headings. It wins you the exact sentence the AI quotes.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) makes your brand recommendable — entity consistency, reviews, mentions across the web, topical authority. It wins you the recommendation itself: "consider X clinic."

You need both. AEO without GEO gets you quoted but never recommended. GEO without AEO gets you respected but never cited verbatim.

Why AI Cites Some Businesses and Ignores Others

AI engines assemble answers from sources they trust: consistent business facts everywhere (name, address, phone identical across directories), genuine reviews with velocity, clear service pages that answer one question per section, FAQ schema marking exact Q&A pairs, fresh content proving you are active, and brand mentions on other reputable sites.

Most businesses fail two or three of these. The fix is systematic, not mysterious.

---

My 6-Step Citation System

1. One question, one section. Every service page gets rewritten so each heading asks the exact question customers type, followed by a 40–60 word direct answer. AI lifts these verbatim.

2. FAQ schema everywhere it fits. Real questions, real answers marked with FAQPage schema. This is the single most-cited format in AI Overviews.

3. Entity cleanup. Your business name, address, phone, hours and services made identical across Google Business Profile, website, JustDial, IndiaMART, social profiles — everywhere. Inconsistency kills AI confidence.

4. Review engine. Steady genuine reviews with detailed text. AI reads review content, not just stars — "painless implant, transparent pricing" teaches the engine what you are known for.

5. Fresh proof of life. Monthly content answering new customer questions. Stale sites look abandoned to AI; active ones look authoritative.

6. Mentions beyond your site. Guest articles, directory features, partnership mentions. AI trusts brands the wider web talks about.

Clients typically see first AI citations within 6–10 weeks of this system going live.

Real Example: How a Clinic Started Getting Named by AI

A Noida dental clinic came to me invisible in AI answers. Searching "best dentist for implants Sector 62" on ChatGPT named three competitors, never them. The diagnosis took one evening: their service pages were single long paragraphs with no direct answers, zero FAQ schema, inconsistent address across JustDial and their site, and 11 thin reviews.

What we changed over six weeks. Every treatment page got question-headings with 50-word direct answers first ("How much do implants cost?" answered in the opening lines, not buried). FAQ schema marked six real Q&A pairs per page. Address and hours unified across GBP, site and four directories. Review requests started naming treatments. Two guest articles on dental health sites mentioned the clinic.

Week seven: Perplexity cited their implant pricing in an answer. Week nine: ChatGPT named them among options for "painless implant Noida" with the review-derived reason attached. Calls mentioning "AI ne bataya" started within the quarter. No single trick — the full system, applied consistently.

5 Mistakes That Keep You Invisible to AI

Mistake 1: burying answers. Your page explains implants for 800 words before stating the cost. AI lifts opening answers, not conclusions. Put the direct answer first, explanation after.

Mistake 2: schema on wrong content. FAQ schema marking marketing fluff instead of real questions gets ignored — or flagged. Mark only genuine Q&A your page visibly answers.

Mistake 3: NAP drift. Your site says "Sector 62," JustDial says "Sec-62," Instagram says "Noida." Each variant erodes the entity confidence AI needs to recommend you. One canonical version everywhere.

Mistake 4: review silence. Twelve old reviews with no text teach AI nothing about what you are known for. Detailed review content is training data for recommendations — "known for painless implants" must exist in reviews before AI repeats it.

Mistake 5: publishing then abandoning. A 2023 blog and silence since signals a dormant business. Monthly fresh answers prove you are active and current — AI weights recency in fast-moving queries.

Your 30-Day AI Visibility Checklist

Week 1 — quotable content. Pick your five highest-value service pages. Rewrite each with question-headings and 40–60 word direct answers up top. Add genuine FAQ sections where they fit naturally.

Week 2 — schema and entities. Mark real Q&A with FAQPage schema and validate. Unify name, address, phone and hours across GBP, site and top directories. Fix every inconsistency you find.

Week 3 — reviews with substance. Request ten customers to mention their specific service and outcome. Respond to every review with specifics. Watch your review text start teaching AI what you are known for.

Week 4 — freshness and mentions. Publish one new answer-page for an emerging customer question. Pitch one guest article or directory feature. Test your brand on ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews and record the baseline — re-test monthly as citations compound.

Most businesses see first citations within two months of this discipline. AEO/GEO work sits inside my monthly retainers (Rs 15k–40k according to work) or as a focused AI-visibility sprint.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is AEO in simple words?
Answer Engine Optimisation structures your content so AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews quote your exact words. Short direct answers, clean headings and FAQ schema are the core mechanics.
What is GEO in simple words?
Generative Engine Optimisation builds your brand's overall recommendability to AI — consistent business facts, genuine reviews, web mentions and topical authority — so AI engines suggest your business by name, not just quote your content.
How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?
Most businesses see first citations within 6–10 weeks of systematic AEO/GEO work — quotable content, FAQ schema, entity cleanup and review velocity. Competitive niches take longer as authority compounds.
Is AEO replacing traditional SEO?
No — it builds on it. AI engines draw from the same crawlable, authoritative web that Google ranks. Businesses with strong classic SEO plus AEO/GEO structure win both blue links and AI citations from the same foundation.
